 A vibrant artist who paints primarily in
acrylics, which she feels expresses the intensity of the color that she
sees around her. The focus of her work is the people she sees around her,
Barbadians at work, play, worship and in reflection. Vanita enjoys
painting the eccentric characters that roam the Barbadian landscape as
well as the costumed tuk bands, landships, moco jumbies and stilt men that
keep Barbadian culture alive.
Vanita gained quick recognition from her
entries in the National Independence Art Festivals of 1990 and 1991, where
she received gold, silver and bronze medals, and for her submissions to
the Newcomer Art Shows where she won several top awards. Vanita Comissiong
was the Gallery Director at the Kirby Art Gallery for five years, a
responsibility undertaken after completing her Associate Degree in Fine
Arts at the Barbados Community College coupled with her fifteen years
experience in the retail business. A wife and a mother of two, Vanita
maintains a thriving art career, coupled with her career in publishing.
