Seya Paraboosingh, poet and painter, was
born 1925 in Allentown Pennsylvania USA. She started painting under
instructions of her late husband Karl Parboosingh. Seya however was a true
artist in her own right long before her marriage to Karl even though she
was more inclined to write poetry.
Seya established herself as one of the most
important female painters in Jamaica. She has exhibited since the 1950’s,
during the 1960s and 70s her work blossomed and she exhibited regularly,
often with her husband.
Predominant in her work is the female image
sometimes represented symbolically. The figure depicted often communicates
a deep anguish. The images at times obscured under layers of transparent
pigment and demonstrating the artist’s underlying concern for texture, are
personal rather than feminist. |
