Born in 1940, Phil Capen grew up in northern Michigan, learning the basics in art from his father. In 1970, a year of study under Charles Hawes (AWS) in the West Indies launched Capen’s adult career as an artist. Having formerly pursued careers in industrial chemistry and teaching, Capen now devotes full time to painting. He resides with his family in South Florida and spends several months each year at a second home in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. Capen is best known for his paintings of the natural landscape. Most of his work is currently being done of Florida and the Bahamas Out Islands, with a few pieces reflecting other travels and interest. Capon’s art has won many awards, and is included in hundreds of private and public collections. A list of significant awards, exhibitions and public collections is available on request. He is an exhibiting member of the American Artists professional League, Inc., the International Society of Marine Painters, the Florida Watercolor Society, and the Miami Watercolor Society. A number of Capen’s watercolors have been reproduced as Limited Edition Prints which are available from many art and framing galleries. |
