Barrington Watson is Jamaica’s master painter. Striking combinations of form and colour that radiate with energy. Whatever his subject, be it landscape or the human form, he executes his work with great skill. The recipient of several awards from many countries, he is recognised for his mastery of technique, depth of feeling and originality of vision. He is the author of Shades of Grey, a collection of autobiographical stories illustrated with his own paintings. The “Pan-Africans” portfolio, comprising forty four paintings, took him four years to complete. Born in 1931 in Lucea, Jamaica, Barrington Watson made his original mark in Jamaica as a soccer player for Kingston College. However, he ultimately followed his artistic yearnings by enrolling at the Royal College of Art in London. He traveled widely and then returned to Jamaica in the early 1960’s. In 1967he won a prize at the first Spanish Biennal at Barcelona. Barrington Watson has exhibited throughout Jamaica and internationally and currently lives in Jamaica. |
